Integration of ICT and sensor technologies in future Smart Homes through Ambient Assisted Living (AAL)has the potential to improve the quality and effectiveness of healthcare provided to independently living elderly persons. In this paper, we survey various categories of AAL systems, their characteristics, and show an experimental example of how a LiDAR ambient sensor and wearable sensors can be integrated to recognize a simple activity of daily living. Future research challenges in activity detection are also presented.en_US
